On the Saturday of Uday’s December workshops, we held a puja to breathe life into the statue of Patanjali that Jess bought for us in Pune earlier in the year. For some who came, it was their first experience of a puja.
Many thanks to Uday, Chaitanya and Andrea for creating such a beautiful atmosphere and guiding us through the ceremony.
What is a Puja?
Essentially it’s a ceremony of respect or adoration. We held it to breathe life into the statue of Patanjali which has recently come to Yogawest from Pune in India. A puja is a beautiful ceremony using ancient Hindu traditions and is a wonderful way of experiencing the more spiritual side of yoga.
Who is Patanjali?
Often called the “father of yoga,” Patanjali was an Indian doctor and sage living around 2000 years ago who systemised his thoughts and knowledge of yoga in The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. In this work, Patanjali compiled 196 sutras that are a blueprint for living a better life. The heart of Patanjali’s teachings is the eightfold path of yoga. It is also called the eight limbs of Patanjali, because they intertwine like the branches of a tree in the forest. These are Patanjali’s suggestions for living a better life through yoga and we still base our practice on his teachings today.
Classes run as usual up to and including 24th December.
On Saturday 24th Diana is teaching the 9.30 Intermediate 1 and 11.30 Beginners class (Annette is celebrating her Christmas as per European tradition on the 24th).
We’d love you to stay for a mince pie and a herbal tea after class if you can spare a few more minutes.
The following class will be on Wednesday 28th Dec at 10am.
Many thank to all of you who donated to the IYDF fund last week. We are just totalling it up, and will let you know how much we raised.
What did I miss?
BKS Iyengar was 93 years old on 14th December.
To mark his birthday, the Iyengar Yoga Association (IYA), to which all our teachers are members, are taking donations for the Iyengar Yoga Development Fund (IYDF). This fund supports teachers in the UK who work with vulnerable members of our community: people with learning difficulties, deaf students, prisoners, children not coping in school, carers etc.
Yogawest is donating the money we earned on Wednesday 14th and we also had a donations box at reception for any of our students who wanted to contribute to this very good cause.
Practising yoga really does relax your mind as well as your body more than other types of exercise, a new study claims.
