Congratulations to our new teachers

We are celebrating…

A brilliant set of exam successes this Summer!

congratsscrollMany congratulations to six newly qualified Yogawest teachers for passing their Introductory Iyengar exams this summer. This qualifies them to teach at Yogawest (and wherever else they like!).

As most of us know, it is no mean feat studying for and passing this exam. For the record, we’d just like to say that it’s no failure not to pass first time: it just means that some roads are a little longer than others. Those who were accepted onto the course in the first place, and entered into the exam were seen to have the potential to be teachers, and we look forward to supporting all our future teachers towards next year’s exam.

SONY DSCWe can’t thank the wonderful Sheila Haswell enough for her incredible hard work and dedication in training this first Yogawest teacher training gang. Sheila has rushed up and down the M4 for many a long hard weekend at the yoga grindstone. Sheila should be very proud indeed of her outstanding pass rate this year; we are all in for a treat to have so many Sheila-trained teachers in the building.

A big thanks also to Lydia Holmes and Edgar Stringer who have loyally supported Sheila throughout the last 2 years, and continue to do so for the current teacher training group.

And a heartfelt thanks to the marvellous Yogawest students who indulged the trainees along their way with supportive comments in class.

Our new teachers

Joining the Yogawest team fresh from our first teacher training course this September are:
Andrew Lux, Lucy Payne, George Healy, Naomi Maggs and Joanna Lambe. Emma Pugh would have loved to take on a class, but lives too far away, so we hope she will cover classes here (or move to Bristol!). We are also pleased to welcome Harriet St Leger onto our team.

Look out for the new Autumn timetable to be published in August, with some newly created classes for our new teachers.

Yogawest 5 year anniversary

Anniversary Class and Party, December 2016

SONY DSC

What a Party!

Although Yogawest (aka The Bristol Iyengar Yoga Centre) has been giving yoga classes in this building for over 30 years, we felt that we’d like to celebrate our five years at the helm.

The Party

SONY DSCSo we offered a class taught by seven of our finest teachers (and were sorry that the full set couldn’t make it). Led by Lizzie Biggin, it was a marvellous 2-hours of fun, frivolity and exciting asanas and sequences. A huge thank you to Lizzie, Jacob, Annemarie, Jess, Claire, Frances, Zoë H and Zoë R: a truly magnificent afternoon.

SONY DSCA special thanks to Anna Argiros for her beautiful ‘cello playing as the class gathered. Anna is off to Sweden for 6 months, we wish her well and look forward to her return in the summer.

SONY DSC

The Party

SONY DSCStudio 2 was the perfect place for eating, drinking and making merry after the class. Many thanks to our resident DJ Annabel.

SONY DSC

Sirsasana demo

SONY DSCWe were treated to a demonstration of Sirsasana and variations in a beautifully choreographed session during the party.

Thanks to Ellen who showed the pregnancy variation: working in the corner with 2 walls as security and guidance!

Julian Trust donations

A sincere thank you to all of you that donated to the Julian Trust on the day. We raised a very impressive £285 for this most worthy local homeless charity.

Yogawest Raffle

SONY DSCMadeleine and Morgan drew the 2016 Yogacard raffle at the party and allocated prices to over 10 lucky winners. The top prize was a monthly yoga card worth £100, and various other Yogawest prizes, including Yogacards gift vouchers were won.

To thank those that came to the anniversary class, and to make sure that everyone got a prize, we handed out free class passes for January 2017 to all-comers to the class.

Well done to all that won!

Christmas Timetable 2016

Opening Times over the Festive Season

Cxmastreepose-150x150lasses are running every day throughout the holiday period at Yogawest, except on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

Download the Christmas reduced timetable here

The full Yogawest timetable resumes on Tuesday January 3rd 2017.

Which classes are running?

Many of our usual classes are still running over the festive period, but as teachers are fewer on the ground, some classes are not on. To make things simpler, and to include everyone in our plans, many of the class are billed as general level – this means that ALL are welcome, whatever your experience or ability and the teacher will adapt the class accordingly.

Lizzie’s popular 2-hour class on Thursday morning is open to all levels of students and although it’s usually a ladies class, men are welcome and encouraged (especially if they wear pink) during the reduced timetable period. It is taught at intermediate level, but beginners are very welcome to come and see what an intermediate class involves – Lizzie/Zoë will look after you!

The Friday morning experienced class on December 23rd is being taught by Bob and is open to intermediate level students: a good way to try this class out!

On December 30th Edgar and Lydia are teaching a special holiday ‘Back to the Mat’ Yoga Day – all welcome and encouraged to restore and revitalise your yoga practice after Christmas, and prepare for the New Year in yoga style. Full details here.

Who is teaching?

Some of our usual teachers are taking a well-earned break over Christmas, and recharging their batteries for the New Year. Most classes are being taught by Yogawest teachers, and they are joined by Melroy Mukwaya who covers classes for us when she can.

5-year celebration December 3rd

Happy 5th anniversary!

SONY DSCWe are celebrating five years since we took over at Yogawest.

Much has happened here during the last five years: we have steadily added classes (there are now over 45 classes on the termtime timetable) and have an amazing team of 17 teachers and 5 admin staff. And we’ve held some brilliant events at Yogawest during that time taught by local and international teachers alike.

So, it’s time to celebrate!

5th Anniversary Celebration Party Saturday afternoon, December 3rd, 3.30-7.30pm

yogawest-openday-pose-7136We are marking the occasion by offering a celebratory class to be taught by at least five (!) Yogawest teachers, this is open to all, but please book your place for the class as we expect it to be busy.

The class will be followed by a party: a chance to catch up with fellow students and teachers in possibly a more relaxed atmosphere than in class! Let reception know if you are planning to come.

The Class, December 3rd, 3.30-5.30

The class will be based around the number five with poses, sequences, teachers appearing in variants of five. Five is a special number in yoga: many aspects of yoga philosophy involve five aspects; expect five of everything!

Places for the class are limited and are bookable at reception by a £10 charitable donation which will go to the Julian Trust, a local homeless charity.

The Party, December 3rd, 5.30–7.30

Come and celebrate our anniversary with drinks, snacks, and Winter cheer. Yogawest teachers and staff are looking forward to letting our hair down and getting to know our students a little better!

Yogacard Raffle

yogawest-gardenparty-7124We have revived our popular Yogacard raffle this year. Write your contact details on your finished Yogacard and hand it in to reception for the raffle box. The draw for some Yogawest-related prizes will take place at the party. If you prepay for a course then at the end of the course you can fill in a card to be entered for the raffle so you won’t miss out!

Specialist workshops with Edgar Stringer

Sunday afternoons 2–5pm

yogawestedgareaster14_73We’re launching a series of 3-hour workshops with Edgar focussing in more detail on particular asanas relating to the chakras.

Suitable for intermediate+ level students.

Running on Sunday afternoons from March, read more about them here.

Mexican yoga holiday Feb 2017

Might you come to Mexico with us?

2241284-Hotel-Na-Balam-Beach-Isla-Mujeres-Hotel-Exterior-1-RTSFollowing many requests for a Mexican yoga holiday, Indira has made enquiries to a number of venues in her beautiful homeland. This yoga holiday will be co-taught by Indira Lopez-Bassols and Diana Penny.

mexico rope studio ILB4-nrcrop600The yoga holiday week will be the half term in February 2017 (around 11th-18th). The hotel Indira has found is set in an astonishing location, serves gourmet vegetarian cuisine, and the rooms are amazing: more like individual bungalows set in beautiful gardens. And the best thing is that they have a fully equipped yoga studio with ropes!

Likely costs

mexico rope studio garden ILB5Venues this amazing don’t come cheap: final costs will depend on the venue we secure and the likely numbers coming. To be announced following response to this information…

Sharing with two others will work out at about £850
Sharing with one other will be about £950
Single rooms will be around £1050

These prices include full board and yoga but not flights.

The teachers

Indira-Diana-navasanaIndira Lopez-Bassols and Diana Penny have taught yoga holidays and workshops together for a few years and enjoy it more each event they do!

They teach a week in Turkey for Heliotrope every May, and regular weekends and yoga days at Yogawest, and are now venturing further afield.

Before and after

mexico rope studio ILB2-nrcrop600Many of you will want to come early or stay on afterwards to explore Mexico a little: it’s a shame to go so far and not take advantage of being in an amazing country. We will give some suggestions of what you may like to do.

Let us know

We’d like to know if you are considering coming on this adventure with us: this will help us put the actual costs of the holiday together. Please email Diana or Indira and let us know.

Until then, Indira and Diana wish you a healthy 2016 and happy dreaming!

Yogawest Staff Christmas party

Although there are around 16 of us working and teaching at Yogawest, we don’t get together very often. So we like to bring as many teachers and support staff together in December and usually plan an activity.

2014 party

SONY DSCLast year we had great fun decorating mini Christmas cakes at Cake in Gloucester Road.

2015 party

SONY DSCThis year the brilliant Jennifer Bell came to run a singing workshop for us. After some hilarious warm-up exercises, we had a crack at Jen’s adaptation of Silent Night. You can listen to the final version below, which for a 90 minute session of the hitherto untrained but enthusiastic Yogawest choir, we think is pretty good!

Congratulations to Edgar and Lizzie!

Amazing Exam Success this Autumn

SONY DSCMany congratulations to two Yogawest teachers for truly outstanding exam successes in November 2015.

Both Lizzie and Edgar took Senior exams in November. Lizzie passed her Senior Level One which is an amazing achievement, and Edgar (along with his wife Lydia who many of you know) passed Senior Level Three which puts them on a par with the top level teachers in the country.

Lizzie teaches at Yogawest on Wednesdays and Thursdays, Edgar teaches on Fridays.

SONY DSCOf course we had to celebrate these successes with some cake (thanks to Emma Pugh!) and a big round of applause!

SONY DSC

And a class photo with Lizzie seemed entirely appropriate to mark the occasion.
