Valuables in the Studio

What are those for?

IMAG0297There’s a bespoke bit of furniture for valuables in Studio 1. This is designed to take small valuables such as keys and mobile phones.

Please leave large bags and coats in the changing rooms or on the coat hooks in the unisex area of the foyer – everything must be contained within the rack please as we use the areas around it for yoga!

If your class is in Studio 2, valuables can be stored on the shelves above the chairs.

Mobile Phones

If you bring your phone into the studio, please do remember to switch it fully off or to airplane mode to ensure it does not bother you and others during the class. We ask that phones are completely turned off  – not just to silent or vibrate – so that the studio environment is pure and not polluted by invading mobile signals: we get enough of those everywhere else!

This article is another in our series of ‘And What Are Those For?’. If there’s a prop you’d like to find out more about, ask us!

5-year celebration December 3rd

Happy 5th anniversary!

SONY DSCWe are celebrating five years since we took over at Yogawest.

Much has happened here during the last five years: we have steadily added classes (there are now over 45 classes on the termtime timetable) and have an amazing team of 17 teachers and 5 admin staff. And we’ve held some brilliant events at Yogawest during that time taught by local and international teachers alike.

So, it’s time to celebrate!

5th Anniversary Celebration Party Saturday afternoon, December 3rd, 3.30-7.30pm

yogawest-openday-pose-7136We are marking the occasion by offering a celebratory class to be taught by at least five (!) Yogawest teachers, this is open to all, but please book your place for the class as we expect it to be busy.

The class will be followed by a party: a chance to catch up with fellow students and teachers in possibly a more relaxed atmosphere than in class! Let reception know if you are planning to come.

The Class, December 3rd, 3.30-5.30

The class will be based around the number five with poses, sequences, teachers appearing in variants of five. Five is a special number in yoga: many aspects of yoga philosophy involve five aspects; expect five of everything!

Places for the class are limited and are bookable at reception by a £10 charitable donation which will go to the Julian Trust, a local homeless charity.

The Party, December 3rd, 5.30–7.30

Come and celebrate our anniversary with drinks, snacks, and Winter cheer. Yogawest teachers and staff are looking forward to letting our hair down and getting to know our students a little better!

Yogacard Raffle

yogawest-gardenparty-7124We have revived our popular Yogacard raffle this year. Write your contact details on your finished Yogacard and hand it in to reception for the raffle box. The draw for some Yogawest-related prizes will take place at the party. If you prepay for a course then at the end of the course you can fill in a card to be entered for the raffle so you won’t miss out!

Quieter Classes

Prefer less people?

Some of our classes are very popular, and get quite busy. Which makes for a great atmosphere in class: our studios are big enough to still have plenty of room and many Yogawest regulars enjoy larger classes.

However, there are some classes on the timetable that are smaller which suit some students better, especially if you’d like more personal attention.

If you’d like to find a quieter class, here are some ideas: Read more

International Day of Yoga June 21st

international-yoga-day-logo-210x236Celebrate the 2nd International Day of Yoga and the Summer Solstice all on the same day!

June 21st is of course the summer solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. In India, the first full moon after the Summer Solstice is known as Guru Purnima where the Guru or teacher is honored. According to yoga legend, the first transmission of yoga by Shiva (the first Guru) is said to have begun on this day.

The United Nations General Assembly declared June 21st as the International Day of Yoga. The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said at the United Nations: “Yoga is an invaluable gift of India’s ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature.”

International Day of Yoga is celebrated all over the world.

Boys need yoga!

New teenager class starts June 6th – boys encouraged!

SONY DSCWe’ve set up a new teenager yoga class for both teenage girls and boys. Our Monday teenager class is very girl-dominant and we hope more boys may come if there is a class with more boys in it.

Teenagers tend to get very stiff in their joints and muscles and due to various lifestyle habits (sport, gaming and of course school-stress), can find it difficult to undo tension and body stress. Regular yoga practice can help to teach and encourage greater body awareness, flexibility and focus.

Many sporting celebrities (Ryan Giggs for example) have used Iyengar yoga to support their career in Rugby, Football and Cricket to name but 3 sports.

This class runs on termtime Thursdays at 4.30 and is taught by Zoë.

SONY DSCPlease help us get this class off the ground – tell your teenagers!
